I get pretty tired of reading so many columns and letters with the same whine: Don't punish the children of illegal immigrants for the crimes committed by their parents.
Well, folks, the reality is that children always suffer for the crimes of their parents. Whether the parent's punishment is paying a fine for a traffic violation using money that could have bought more food or school supplies, or a prison sentence that removes the parent from the child's life for months or years or forever, the children always suffer when their parents commit crimes. It is unavoidable.
This is not a reason to decriminalize everything, or even a reason to decriminalize or decline to prosecute only those crimes associated with illegal immigration. It is, however, a reason for parents to not commit crimes in the first place, whether related to illegal immigration or anything else.
The people who need to "think of the children" are first and foremost their parents. If they don't, it is the failure of the parents, not the rest of us.
And if their children want to blame someone, that is also where the blame needs to go. "We" didn't do anything to hurt them; their parents did.
